In the US, the stripes on a tie run downward from right to left,
but in England, the stripes run downward from left to right.

Which is the right way for tie stripes to go? The stripes should go in the same direction as the suit jacket closes. In other words, if the buttons on your jacket are on the right side of jacket, the stripes of the tie should run downward to the right (and vice versa).

Long johns, introduced in the 1880s, were called union suits because they were worn by Civil War soldiers. The union suit was renamed long johns in the 1940s. The name was taken from the similarly styled swimming trunk named after the garment that heavyweight boxing champion John L. Sullivan wore.
